General comments: | Founded in 1903, the Argyros estate is run by Matthew Argyros, a 4th generation winemaker. Based in Episkopi Santorini, the winery owns 120ha of vineyards with ungrafted -original rootstock – phylloxera safe plants averaging 70 years old, including some of the oldest vines on the island which are over 200 years old. The vines range from 120 to 200 years old and are cultivated in basket form, a traditional technique called “kouloura”. Santorini’s inorganic soil is naturally immune to Phylloxera and many other pests. Santorini is a volcanic island with strong winds and lots of sun. The soil is composed of volcanic ashes and sand, pumice and lava stone. It is a very poor and hostile environment, lacking all the organic material and water. Characteristics: | Vinsanto is a naturally sweet wine, made only by white sundried grapes. Vinsanto 12y.o. it is a mix of Assyrtiko, Aidani and Athiri. The grapes are carefully stretched under the Santorini sun for approximately 2-3 weeks. Dark color of aged cognac with honey hues and nice clarity. Rich, complex nose with dried apricots and prunes scents, preparing for a wonderful, multi-layered, long lasting and deep mouth feel. Dried fruits and nuts, tobacco and chocolate on the palate, gradually leading to a long lasting aftertaste. Aging potential: 80+ years |
